Jason Momoa has enlisted in the Super Earth military for Justin Lin’s Helldivers movie.
Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 was one of the big stories in gaming back in 2024, and so there was – perhaps inevitably – a mooted big screen adaptation on the cards. That sort of development doesn’t necessarily mean a movie will eventuate smartly – look how long we’ve been waiting for a Sleeping Dogs movie for a prime example – but things seem to be moving along at a decent clip.
As per Deadline, Jason Momoa has signed on to star in a role that has yet to be revealed. Big Jase is the first casting news to come out of the project, but The Fast And The Furious veteran Justin Lin, who worked with Momoa on 2021’s F9 (and a few bits of Fast X, we assume), is directing from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman (a staggering number of Conjuring films). The film is set for a November 10, 2027 release date in North America.
And that’s all we know! Plot? Characters? Forget it – details are being kept under lock and key. But if you’ve played Helldivers 2, you know it’s more or less a riff on Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers, itself a satirical riff on Robert Heinlein’s 1959 novel of the same name, wherein hapless human conscripts battle waves of alien bugs, cyborgs and whatnot. The body count is crazy high to the point where, although our man Momoa has been announced, he very well may not be the protagonist, or indeed get much screen time. at all. When the film was announced, Arrowhead Studios’ Shams Jorjani jquipped that he was “…hoping for as many A-listers as possible” to appear in the movie, with the caveat that they “…get violently killed immediately.”
So, Jason Momoa is in Helldivers – briefly, at least.
