Walking blockbuster factory Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Top Gun 3 is on the cards, but new Pirates movies may come first.
Uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the guy who bottled the formula for four quadrant tentpole crowd pleasers back in the day with stuff like Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, and Days Of Thunder, before pretty much defining ’90s American action cinema by producing Con Air, The Rock, Armageddon, and suchlike. But the biggest titles on his impressive C.V. are, beyond the shadow of a doubt, the aforementioned Top Gun, especially since Top Gun: Maverick pretty much saved cinema, and the Pirates Of The Caribbean flicks. And they’re both seemingly on the verge of getting sequels.
Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Bruckheimer said that future films for both the Top Gun and Pirates franchises were both in development, but which one would get a production green light first was up in the air.
“I think it’s a horse race between the two of them,” Bruckheimer said. “So we’ll see. Right now, Top Gun is a hair ahead, but that’s it. We’re expecting a script shortly.”
That could very well be a script by Mission: Impossible mainstay Christopher McQuarrie, who was reported to be penning the next Top Gun script back in May, but there’s been no word regarding his involvement since.
Bruckheimer also confirmed that he’d spoken to Margot Robbie about the Wuthering Heights star headlining the next Pirates Of The Caribbean film. Robbie was first attached to a potential Pirates spin off back in 2020, with nothing ever eventuating, but it seems she’s still got an interest in the series. It was recently reported that Krysty Wilson-Cairns, Oscar-nominated for her 1917 script, was in talks with Walt Disney Studios to write the next film in the franchise, so it’s clear that Disney want to get the series back on its feet. There’s been no news as yet regarding whether Johnny Depp will factor into the future of the franchise, and let’s face it – that’s probably for the best.
