The star and director of Beau is Afraid have reunited for a Western. We did not see that coming.
Coming our way from – who else? – A24, Eddington sees director Ari Aster once again working with his Beau is Afraid star, Joaquin Phoenix. Surprisingly, they’re making a Western. Unsurprisingly, it’s not a normal Western. Let’s take a look at the teaser trailer.
Clear as mud. Intriguing, though. set in 2020, Eddington looks like a Western for the social media age, one that follows the rivalry between the titular New Mexico town’s sheriff, Joe Cross (that’ll be Phoenix) and its mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal). Written and directed by Aster, Eddington also stars Emma Stone as Louise, Phoenix’s on-screen wife, and Austin Butler as Vernon Jefferson Peak, who seems to be some manner of revival preacher/snake oil salesman (delete as appropriate). Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward Clifton Collins Jr. and William Belleau are also on board.
There’s no word of a release date yet, but Eddington is screening in competition at Cannes in May, so June or July seems like a safe bet. If you’re after more details the script is out in the wild, and World of Reel have a fairly decent analysis here. Otherwise, enjoy this rather portentous poster:
