Gunship Release The Theme Song To John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando

Share

British synthwave exponents Gunship have teamed up with their spiritual father, John Carpenter, for “Tell Me When The World Stops Ending”.

He may not have made two many movies of late, but Master Of Horror John Carpenter loves his video games. And basketball. And telling rude audience members to go fuck themselves. But it’s the first one that concerns us today, as the director of The Thing, Escape From New York, They Live, and honestly a good dozen of my favourite films of all time, has a new game coming out: John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando. And while Carpo himself has provided the soundtrack in collaboration with Fractal Edge Music, British synthwave outfit Gunship have flung out a new song for the upcoming shooter. Check it out:

“Tell Me When The World Stops Ending” isn’t the first time Carpenter and Gunship have worked together, with the irascible filmmaker having contributed to the band’s self-titled debut album in 2015, as well as 2023’s Unicorn. That makes sense, of course; musically, Gunship are deeply influenced by Carpenter, who composed the overwhelming bulk of the scores for his films and now has a pretty great second career touring live. I caught him in London in 2016 on Halloween, appropriately enough and, brother, if you ever get the chance, I highly recommend seeing the old master on the keys.

Speaking to NME about song, Gunship’s Dan Haigh said, “The introduction and atmospheric parts draw inspiration from John Carpenter‘s iconic soundtrack work, particularly his work on Halloween, The Fog, and Prince Of Darkness. John’s approach to weaving together incredibly rich synthesizer-driven atmosphere has always been a cornerstone of Gunship’s writing style. Other inspiration came from the original Omen soundtrack in particular ‘Ave Satani’ which led to us reaching out to Choir Noir for the haunting choral elements featured in both the intro and middle of the track.”

As for the game itself, per publishers Focus Entertainment:

In the near future, an experimental attempt to harness the power of the Earth’s core ends in a terrifying disaster: the release of the Sludge God. This eldritch abomination begins terraforming the area, turning soil to scum and the living to undead monsters. However, the genius behind the experiment has a plan to make things right. All he needs is a team of competent, highly trained mercenaries to get the job done… Unfortunately, they were all too expensive. Which is why he’s hired…

The Toxic Commandos

Take control of one of the commandos, team up with your friends and send the Sludge God and its horde of things-that-should-never-be back to the underworld. Choose the class that matches your playstyle, pile into your favorite ride, and unload an array of gunfire, grenades, special abilities, and freaking katanas as you save the planet.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is out on Windows, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 on March 12.
