King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will play a free one-off live rave set at Melbourne’s Fed Square this week.
Fed Square has announced another round of major free outdoor music events, with Melbourne’s own King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard set to headline a special performance on Friday, 24 October. The psych-rock heavyweights will make their long-awaited return to home soil with a one-off live rave set, marking their first Australian show in over two years.
Yep, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are making techno now. The performance will feature the band creating live, unscripted electronic music using their eurorack-modular setups. While the group’s constant genre-hopping has become a defining trait, this marks their most radical live transformation yet.
The free, all-ages event will open with a set from Berlin-based, Naarm-born DJ and producer Merve. Known for her magnetic presence and boundary-pushing sound, Merve has performed everywhere from Panorama Bar to Boiler Room, earning a reputation as one of Australia’s most dynamic electronic artists.
Fed Square’s summer program continues on Thursday 27 November with two house music icons: Detroit’s Moodymann and Melbourne’s DJ JNETT. Moodymann, celebrated for his deep house sound infused with soul, funk, disco, and hip hop, remains one of electronic music’s most distinctive and unpredictable figures. DJ JNETT, a cornerstone of Australia’s electronic scene, joins the bill with her genre-spanning sets that have defined decades of dance culture.
Closing out the year, Fed Square will again host its annual New Year’s Eve celebration, curated by Barry Sunset and featuring MzRizk, Gavin Campbell, and Barry Sunset himself. There’s apparently even more events and announcements to be revealed – so if you’re in Melbourne, expect a pretty packed summer of free gigs just off the Yarra (and a very convenient short walk from Flinders St Station, to boot).
Katrina Sedgwick OAM, Director & CEO of MAP Co, said the announcement reflects Fed Square’s growing role as Melbourne’s cultural hub. “Fed Square has cemented its place as one of Australia’s most exciting homes for live music, drawing huge crowds to free events right in the heart of Melbourne. This next wave of events builds on that success, with King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Moodymann and Jnett joining a line-up of world-class artists who make Fed Square the place to experience unforgettable live music – accessible and open for everyone to enjoy.”
This isn’t the only King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard performance Aussies are being treated to this year, either. The band is set to hit the East Coast this December for a run of rock and orchestral shows (performed separately, in case you were wondering), including a stop at the Sydney Opera House. Between raves, rock shows, and a full orchestral arrangement, the band is taking their genre-hopping expertise to the next level. Any bets on what wild genre turn they’ll take next?
