After four decades of riffs sharp enough to draw blood, Megadeth have finally done the one thing that somehow kept slipping through their fingers, a No. 1 album in the United States.
According to Billboard, the thrash legends have scored their first ever US chart topper with their final record, the self-titled Megadeth.
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, pulling 73,000 equivalent album units in the week ending January 29th, per Luminate, with a huge 69,000 of that coming from pure album sales. That’s the best part right there, fans are actually buying the album like it’s 1992 and the CD store still exists.
The record follows 2022’s The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! and was released via Dave Mustaine’s Tradecraft imprint through Frontiers Label Group’s BLKIIBLK label.
Number 1 in Australia
It’s not just America. Megadeth have also hit No. 1 in Australia (their highest ever position here, previously No. 2), plus No. 1 in Austria, other high placements include top five spots across Finland, Sweden, Belgium, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and New Zealand.
Mustaine marked the moment (per Blabbermouth) with the kind of exhausted gratitude only a lifer can deliver:
“After 40 years of delivering MEGADETH music, playing shows around the world, I have nothing but gratitude at this moment. Finding out that our last MEGADETH record is also our first No. 1 only further validates my will to go out on top.
“Thank you to my family, Teemu Mäntysaari, James LoMenzo, Dirk Verbueren and Chris Rakestraw, all our fans for making this possible. Without you MEGADETH would not be as successful as we are. I’d also like to thank the people behind the scenes, our management, Danny Nozell, Justis Mustaine, and Steve Ross at CTK, and our label BLKIIBLK/Tradecraft.
“This recording is a labour of love, and I hope you enjoy this as much as we do. See you on tour soon!”
Megadeth announced in August 2025 that this would be their final studio album, with a farewell tour set for 2026. So yeah, if they’re going out, they’re doing it with the crown on.
