Dave Mustaine Says Megadeth Still Have Completed Songs In The Vault

Megadeth’s final album is already out, but frontman Dave Mustaine says completed material from those sessions remains unreleased.

Megadeth still have completed songs from the sessions for their self-titled final studio album that have not been released, according to frontman Dave Mustaine.

Speaking at a Rolling Stone event for his memoir In My Darkest Hour in New York earlier this month, Mustaine said there were a couple of completed songs from the album sessions with bassist James LoMenzo, guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari and drummer Dirk Verbeuren “that we did not release yet”.

What happens to them is less certain.

Mustaine suggested the recordings were “supposed to be bonus tracks for the label or something”, but stopped well short of confirming a release plan.

The wrinkle is that extra material from Megadeth has already been discussed publicly.

In a February interview with Primordial Radio, Mustaine said the band reached “15 or 16 ideas” during the album sessions. He named ‘Nobody’s Hero’, ‘Farewell, My Love’ and ‘Bloodlust’ among the additional tracks, according to a transcription published by Blabbermouth.

Two of those titles are already accounted for in bonus-track form.

Megadeth’s official album page lists ‘Nobody’s Hero’ as an expanded digital bonus track and ‘Bloodlust’ as a Target exclusive.

That complicates the question of which completed songs Mustaine is now referring to.

In August, Mustaine told Metal Hammer that ‘Bloodlust’ and ‘Farewell, My Love’ were among the tracks left over from the album sessions. He also floated a possible third title, ‘When Robots Rule’, before conceding that he might be mixing things up.

Megadeth’s current official album page does not list either ‘Farewell, My Love’ or ‘When Robots Rule’ in the track listing.

So while Mustaine’s latest comments confirm that completed material from the sessions remains in the vault, exactly which songs he means and whether they are formally scheduled for release remain unclear.

Their final self-titled studio album arrived on January 23 through Mustaine’s Tradecraft imprint and Frontiers Label Group’s BLKIIBLK Records, securing Megadeth their first No. 1 album in both Australia and the US.

The unreleased material also remains an open question as Megadeth approach the Australian leg of their farewell tour, joining Iron Maiden for five shows across Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane this November.

For now, the final Megadeth album is out. Everything recorded for it, apparently, is not.
