Mephisto Odyssey To Unveil Long Lost Wayne Static Collaboration ‘CRASH: Reborn’ On New Year’s Eve

A long shelved collaboration between Mephisto Odyssey and the late Wayne Static is finally set to see the light of day.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the original track, the band will premiere ‘CRASH: Reborn’ as a New Year’s Eve release, dropping at midnight on December 31st.

Originally written in 2001, ‘Crash’ was co-written by Static alongside Mikael Johnston and Orpheos Dejournette, with additional contributions from Koichi Fukuda (Static-X) and Brad Gillis (Ozzy Osbourne, Night Ranger).

The song first appeared on the Beneath… Between… Beyond… compilation, while a Humble Brothers remix later surfaced on the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker soundtrack.

This new version, Johnston stresses, is far more than a remix.

“With social media amplifying our inner demons and influencer culture leaving us all feeling like falling stars, these lyrics cut deeper now,” he said, describing CRASH: Reborn as “a cathartic explosion fans need.”

Rebuilt from the ground up, the track leans into a darker, more cinematic fusion of electronic and industrial rock, while preserving Wayne Static’s unmistakable vocal performance.

The release arrives alongside a new music video shot in 4K, directed by William Instone (Butchers Bluff), who also co-directed the original clip with Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free Or Die Hard).

Comic-book DNA

According to Johnston, the new visual expands on the original’s comic-book DNA, drawing from the Batman/Joker lineage and introducing a female led interpretation inspired by 2019’s Joker.

‘CRASH: Reborn’ will be available as a name your price release on Bandcamp, alongside streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music.

Wayne Static passed away in 2014, but his legacy has remained active, Static-X reformed with vocalist Xer0, releasing Project Regeneration Vol. 1 in 2020 and Vol. 2 in 2024 using Static’s remaining studio recordings, followed by extensive touring.

Recent months have also seen controversy surrounding an unauthorised documentary announced by collaborator Matt Zane, prompting cease and desist orders from the estates of Static and his late wife Tera Wray. Static-X are currently working on their own official Evil Disco documentary.
