Metallica has added another milestone to its already historic M72 World Tour, setting a new attendance record at Berlin’s Olympiastadion after performing to a crowd of more than 94,000 fans on May 30th.
The achievement makes the concert the largest stadium show ever held at the iconic German venue, surpassing the previous benchmark set by U2 in 2009 (Per Blabbermouth). While Olympiastadion typically accommodates around 72,000 concertgoers, Metallica’s innovative stage production allowed promoters to significantly increase capacity.
A major factor behind the record breaking turnout is the band’s ambitious in the round M72 stage design, introduced when the tour launched in 2023, the setup places Metallica’s famous Snake Pit at the centre of the venue rather than in front of the stage, creating additional space for ticket sales. The circular production also features towering video and audio structures positioned throughout the stadium, ensuring fans receive a premium view from nearly every angle.
Metallica acknowledged the milestone on social media shortly after the show, posting:
“Night after night, city after city, the #MetallicaFamily is bringing it! Yesterday, over 94,000 of you helped break the record for the biggest EVER show at Olympiastadion. Thank you!”
The Berlin achievement follows another attendance record set earlier this month in Athens, where more than 90,000 fans packed Olympic Stadium. The band has repeatedly demonstrated the extraordinary demand for its live performances, with previous M72 stops also setting venue attendance records around the world.
Phenomenal numbers
The numbers behind the tour are staggering, industry reports estimate the M72 World Tour had generated approximately US$476 million from 64 performances by August 2025, attracting nearly four million fans. With additional European dates now included, projections place total revenue above US$600 million and attendance approaching five million people.
Metallica’s longtime manager Cliff Burnstein recently reflected on the band’s enduring popularity:
“They are absolutely at the highest plateau in terms of their worldwide popularity,” he said.
Beyond ticket sales, the tour continues to support charitable causes through Metallica’s All Within My Hands foundation. A portion of every ticket sold contributes to programs focused on education, food insecurity and disaster relief, helping communities while the band continues its record-breaking run across the globe.
