Share

The heavy music world is mourning the loss of pioneering death metal musician Mike Browning, who has died at the age of 62.

Browning was best known as the original drummer and vocalist for Morbid Angel before going on to found influential sci-fi death metal outfit Nocturnus, his passing was confirmed by Profound Lore Records, the label behind the two most recent albums from his later project, Nocturnus AD.

In a tribute shared on social media, the label wrote:

“RIP death metal legend/sci-fi death metal godfather Mike Browning of NOCTURNUS/NOCTURNUS AD. Journey beyond the gateway to the outer void!”

Morbid Angel also paid tribute to their former bandmate, posting (per Blabbermouth):

“R.I.P Mike, thanks for helping making all this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter.”

A lasting legacy

Browning played on Abominations of Desolation, the recording originally intended to serve as Morbid Angel’s debut album, although it was recorded in 1986, the album wasn’t officially released until 1991 after years of circulating through the underground tape trading scene.

Following his departure from Morbid Angel in 1987, Browning formed Nocturnus, a band that helped redefine the boundaries of death metal by blending technical musicianship with science fiction themes and atmospheric keyboards.

The group’s landmark 1990 album The Key remains one of the genre’s most influential releases, outside of Nocturnus, Browning also performed with Florida death metal acts Incubus and Acheron before releasing solo material and later reviving his vision through Nocturnus AD.

His final chapter saw Nocturnus AD release Paradox in 2019 and Unicursal in 2024, further cementing Browning’s reputation as one of extreme metal’s most creative and enduring figures.

Known for pushing death metal into new territory while remaining fiercely committed to the underground, Browning leaves behind a legacy that shaped generations of extreme music.

He is survived by his daughter, rest easy Mike.
