Mortal Sin Eye Release Of 1989 Metallica Support-Show Recording

Mat Maurer says Mortal Sin have a Melbourne desk tape in the vault, alongside plans for a best-of and live release in 2027.

Mortal Sin could bring a piece of Australian thrash history out of the vault, with vocalist Mat Maurer revealing the band has a desk recording of its 1989 Melbourne show supporting Metallica.

The tape is among the releases Maurer is discussing as the reunited band looks towards 2027 — and potentially writing new music.

Speaking to Finland’s Rauta, with his comments also transcribed by Blabbermouth, Maurer said “we’ve got a desk tape of when we played with Metallica back in 1989”, identifying Melbourne as the location and praising the recording’s quality.

Maurer mentioned the Melbourne tape alongside the band’s planned 2027 releases, but did not provide a release date or further details.

The more concrete plans are a first best-of compilation and a live release drawn from Mortal Sin’s 2026 Keep It True festival set. Maurer says the proposed vinyl compilation would collect three or four songs from each album, while the band already has the festival audio.

Those releases would give the band breathing room to concentrate on new material. Maurer said the idea was to “hopefully write some songs”, although a new studio album has only been loosely discussed.

He also explains that Mortal Sin’s music comes before his lyrics, which require time spent listening and working out the story each track should tell.

The plans follow a busy return to touring. Mortal Sin’s official website documented European festival appearances at Brutal Assault and Alcatraz this year, while BLUNT previously covered their Australian co-headline run with Flotsam And Jetsam.

For now, the archive offers the clearest next step. A new Mortal Sin record remains a possibility, with the songwriting and release details still to come.
