Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel dig into the past with bloody results in The Green Knight director David Lowery’s latest.
With its second trailer, Mother Mary is still playing it a bot coy vis a vis what exactly is going in in David Lowery’s latest. We know that Anne Hathaway is playing a very Madonna-ish pop diva, and Michaela Coel is the fashion designer she spurned – personally? Professionally? Both?- back in the day. This means the tension is already high when they reconnect. But the question is: is this a horror movie? Some of the bloody imagery in this new look points to yes, but the whole thing could be allegorical.
Mother Mary Trailer
What’s the plot?
As the official synopsis tells us:
Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.
Which doesn’t clear up much, to be honest. The fact that FKA Twigs, Jack Antonoff, and Charli XCX are contributing original songs for the soundtrack raises the interest meter a few bars, though.
Who’s in it?
- Anne Hathaway as Mother Mary.
- Michaela Coel as Sam Anselm.
- Hunter Schafer as Hilda.
- Sian Clifford as Jade.
- Atheena Frizzell as Emily.
- Jessica Brown Findlay as Tessa.
- Isaura Barbé-Brown as Kyla.
Plus Alba Baptista, Kaia Gerber, and FKA Twigs in support.
When’s it out?
Mother Mary hits Australian cinemas on April 16.
What’s the vibe?
Intriguing! As is customary for A24, actual details are as scant as the philosophical themes underpinning A Ghost Story but David Lowery is a bit of a gun – in fact, he did The Old Man And The Gun with the late and much-lauded Robert Redford. His stuff is always worth a look.
