Mudhoney Are Returning To Australia This October For Their First Club Run In Years

Share

Before grunge became a global movement, Mudhoney were already making the noise that helped define it.

This October, Seattle icons Mudhoney are heading back to Australia for a run of club shows alongside a headline appearance at Brisbane’s 4ZZZ FM Zed 51 Festival, before crossing the Tasman for their first New Zealand dates in more than a decade.

Presented by Press Play, the run gives Australian fans a chance to catch one of alternative music’s foundational bands in venues built for sweat, distortion and volume.

Mudhoney’s influence stretches far beyond their own catalogue. Formed in 1988, the four piece became one of the defining acts on legendary independent label Sub Pop and helped establish the blueprint that would later push Seattle into the mainstream.

Even their peers continue to acknowledge that legacy, as Eddie Vedder once put it:

“When it comes to grunge or even just Seattle, I think there was one band that made the definitive music of the time. It wasn’t us or Nirvana, but Mudhoney. Nirvana delivered it to the world, but Mudhoney were the band of that time and sound.”

From early releases like Touch Me I’m Sick through to Suck You Dry, Mudhoney’s mix of garage rock, punk and fuzz heavy tunes became essential listening for an entire generation of heavy and alternative music fans.

They’re also still moving forward, their most recent album, Plastic Eternity, arrived in 2023 and proved the band remains as restless and loud as ever.

California’s Primitive Ring supporting

Making their Australian debut on the run are Los Angeles trio Primitive Ring, who arrive with serious pedigree behind them, fresh off releasing their self-titled debut through In The Red Records.

The band brings together Bert Hoover, Jon Modaff and Charles Moothart, musicians whose resumes stretch across names including Fuzz, GØGGS, Ty Segall Band, Mikal Cronin and Iggy Pop’s touring lineup.

Built from garage rock, psych and fuzzed-out heavy grooves, Primitive Ring have spent the last year quickly turning early word of mouth into momentum, making this first local run one worth showing up early for.
