My Chemical Romance Face Legal Action Over Cheerleader Costumes

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ brand owner is seeking court restrictions over lookalike uniforms used at the Hollywood Bowl, according to TheWrap.

My Chemical Romance are facing legal action over cheerleader-style costumes used in their Hollywood Bowl production, with the owner of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders brand seeking to stop further use of the outfits, TheWrap reports.

According to TheWrap, Pro Silver Star Ltd. requested a temporary restraining order and a temporary injunction, along with unspecified monetary damages. The outlet says it obtained and reviewed the legal documents.

The dispute concerns a performance on Wednesday 21 October. Metal Injection also reports that Pro Silver Star alleges dancers in lookalike uniforms carried rifles during a theatrical firefight and were depicted being shot.

Pro Silver Star argues that the cheerleaders’ distinctive uniform design is protected trade dress. It alleges that the lookalike costumes infringed that protection and led some viewers to believe the performers were the actual Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

The filing’s reported wording narrows the company’s objection to the outfits. According to TheWrap, Pro Silver Star says it is not seeking changes to the band’s music, political message, choreography or use of armed characters in the production; it wants the disputed uniforms removed from those scenes.

TheWrap also reports that Pro Silver Star alleges it asked the band to stop using the costumes and that the request was refused. The outlet reported that a representative for My Chemical Romance did not immediately respond to its request for comment.

The band have further Hollywood Bowl appearances scheduled for Friday 30 October and Saturday 31 October, according to promoter Live Nation Hewitt Silva. Whether those performances will include the disputed costumes has not been confirmed.

BLUNT has emailed the Dallas County District Clerk’s office requesting the public court record. BLUNT has not independently obtained the filing or verified whether the court has granted the requested restrictions.
