This could either be really fun or really grating.
Can you have too much of a good thing? It’s always great to see Matt Berry or Natasha Lyonne, but Matt Berry and Natasha Lyonne? How much practiced eccentricity can one series contain?
Well, we’re about to find out as Lyonne and Berry are teaming up for a new comedy series, Force & Majeure, which sounds like a concept that would fit quite nicely in an episode of Archer or The Venture Bros.
As reported in Deadline, Force & Majeure is a “retro-infused, playfully irreverent take on the classic TV action-adventure detective genre” sees Berry as British art expert Thomas Force, with Lyonne as American mercenary Jennifer Majeure. The pair are recruited by “eccentric, justice-obsessed billionaire” Amanda Deventry to fight the nefarious plots of various megalomaniacs throughout Europe.
But, as we all surely know by now, there are no good billionaires, and our heroes find themselves trying to escape Deventry’s clutches as well. Which, to me, sounds like they’re caught up in a turf war between Bond villains, which is an intriguing notion.
Force & Majeure sees Lyonne with reuniting with Russian Doll writer Cirocco Dunlap, along with What We Do In The Shadows scribe Tom Scharpling. The series is co-created by Lyonne, Berry, Scharpling, and Iain Morris (The Inbetweeners). It’ll air on Sky in the UK, with international distro yet to be finalised.
Well, this sounds like fun. ’80s TV was positively littered with high concept action junk which was close enough to parody as to be indistinguishable, so it’s not like they’ll run short of material to lampoon. No further details have been announced as yet, but expect casting and production news to drop soon as production ramps up.
