The Iron Maiden drummer discusses rejecting the invitation in an interview accompanying his new autobiography, Hello Boys and Girls!
Nicko McBrain has revealed that he declined an invitation to play golf with Donald Trump, sharply criticising the US president in a new interview.
Speaking to The Telegraph’s Ian Winwood about his new autobiography, Hello Boys and Girls!, the Iron Maiden drummer said the invitation came through a friend who is a committed Republican.
His response was immediate: “You f—ing what?”
The golf invitation, at least, will not be adding another chapter
Although McBrain said he did not consider himself politically inclined, he made his position on Trump clear. He ended that part of the conversation by saying Trump and members of his administration “should be put in jail”.
Those are McBrain’s opinions, expressed during a wider interview about his life and new autobiography, Hello Boys and Girls!. They do not accompany any newly reported criminal finding.
The interview also offers a less familiar view of a musician whose public identity is bound to more than four decades of Iron Maiden. McBrain discusses his love of funk and soul, including Level 42, and reflects on life away from the band’s touring routine.
That distinction matters. McBrain retired from touring with Iron Maiden in December 2024, playing his final show with them in São Paulo. His announcement left room for other projects and continued involvement with the Maiden family.
His memoir takes a much longer view of the career that brought him there. The publisher’s account traces his path through earlier bands, including Pat Travers’ group and Trust, before he joined Iron Maiden in 1982.
Hello Boys and Girls! is released on October 22, tracing McBrain’s life before Iron Maiden, his decades behind the kit and the transition away from touring.
