One year after Black Sabbath closed the curtain on one of heavy metal’s most emotional farewell performances, fans are finally getting another major tribute to the band that started it all.
The Masters of Reality – Why Black Sabbath Matter has officially been announced as the first authorised book dedicated to the legendary Birmingham four piece. Created by acclaimed rock photographer Ross Halfin, the 500 page release documents the band’s journey from their late 1960s beginnings through to their final performance at Back to the Beginning on July 5, 2025.
Packed with rare photography, memorabilia and new interviews with Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, the book also features essays from respected rock writers Geoff Barton and Dave Ling.
The announcement arrives almost exactly one year after Black Sabbath‘s farewell concert, a performance that has taken on even greater significance following Ozzy Osbourne’s passing just over two weeks later on July 22, 2025.

Earlier this year, Sharon Osbourne revealed just how close Ozzy came to missing that final appearance
“Two weeks before the show, they said he could probably die, and he did,” she said. “But he wanted to do it so bad. He needed it. And it’s, like, ‘Whether I die in two weeks or I die in six months, I’m still dying. And I wanna go my way.’ And he did. He went like a rock star.”
Halfin explained that the book’s release schedule changed following Ozzy’s passing:
“Ozzy and Sharon wanted the book out soon after the final show in Birmingham but Ozzy suddenly passing away caused the music world to stop,” Halfin explained (per Ultimate Classic Rock).
“Ozzy was fully involved with the book and he signed the book plates months before the final show, as did all the band members. So now, we all thought the time was right, one year after Back to the Beginning, to announce the project. A book we all feel celebrates both Black Sabbath and Ozzy and illustrates just how important they are. I hope fans enjoy it.”

The book is available to preorder now ahead of its October release in three editions, including two ultra limited signed versions featuring book plates signed by all four original members.
