Most parents would probably jump at the chance to watch their child headline one of the biggest music festivals in the world.
Olivia Rodrigo’s mum had other plans.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the pop superstar shared a hilarious story from last year’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, where she was forced to compete with nu-metal giants Korn for her own mother’s attention.
As it turns out, Korn won (per Revolver):
“My mom likes so many crazy metal bands, which you would never guess just looking at her,” Rodrigo explained.
The singer recalled headlining the festival and discovering that Korn were scheduled to perform at exactly the same time on a different stage:
“I headlined Lollapalooza last year, which was so awesome and such a dream of mine. But they have like headliners go at the same time. So, on this specific day, it was me and Korn headlining at the same time on like opposite stages.”
No crossovers right?
Rodrigo joked that festival organisers probably assumed there would be little crossover between the two fanbases:
“Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, that’s perfect. You know, the Olivia fans will go see Olivia, the Korn fans will go see Korn. You know, there’s really no overlap.’ But there was one overlap, and it was my mom.”
The punchline?
“My mom skipped my show to go see Korn! I let her do it, I’m happy she got her night.”
While Rodrigo has become one of pop music’s biggest stars, she’s never hidden her appreciation for alternative and rock music. Over the years she’s praised bands like Rage Against the Machine, toured alongside alternative rock veterans The Breeders, developed a friendship with Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna and even collaborated with The Cure’s Robert Smith.
The story also highlights just how wide Korn‘s influence continues to stretch, more than three decades after helping define the nu-metal movement, the band remains capable of pulling fans from all corners of the music world, including the parents of chart-topping pop stars.
The timing of Rodrigo’s revelation comes as she prepares to release her new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which is out now.
Meanwhile, Korn recently returned with “Reward the Scars,” their first new music in four years, proving they still have plenty of pull, even when they’re competing against a headlining daughter.
