Poppy has dropped a haunting new track titled ‘In Death We’ve Just Begun’, created alongside experimental outfit Son Lux for the upcoming video game ‘Marathon’.
The song arrives shortly after the release of Poppy’s latest album ‘Empty Hands’, continuing the artist’s run of genre-bending work that refuses to stay pinned to one scene.
Built around slow burning electronics and pulsing low end textures, the track taps directly into the dark sci-fi world of Bungie’s new shooter (per Revolver).
A Song Built For A Dystopian World
Developed by Bungie, the studio behind Halo, ‘Marathon’ is described as a survival extraction shooter set in a bleak science fiction universe, the game revives the storyline of Bungie’s original 1990s ‘Marathon’ series, but this time players take on the role of cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners.
Their mission involves scavenging hostile environments while battling security forces and rival threats, Poppy’s track sits neatly inside that atmosphere.
‘In Death We’ve Just Begun’ moves through layered electronic pulses, drifting strings and restrained vocals, the result feels almost hypnotic, leaning more cinematic than explosive, mirroring the eerie quiet of deep space survival.
At one point Poppy sings:
“Is there a sign of life in what’s beyond? / If I get out alive, they’ll call me god”.
A Cinematic Reveal
The song appears in a new cinematic teaser tied to the game’s launch. The song appears in a new cinematic teaser tied to the game’s launch.
Directed by Harmony Korine (‘Gummo’) and Sam Goldwater, the video shows the game’s Runners dropping into chaotic missions, fighting through hostile territory and scrambling through rescue operations.
It’s a stylised look at the universe rather than raw gameplay footage. Still, the visual tone lines up perfectly with the slow burn tension of the soundtrack.
More Music On The Way
The full ‘Marathon’ soundtrack arrives this Friday (March 6th), featuring additional score work from Son Lux composer Ryan Lott, Poppy is also gearing up for a busy year on the road. Her ‘Constantly Nowhere’ North American tour kicks off July 7th in Washington, DC, running for 27 headline shows.
Support on the run will come from French metalcore band LANDMVRKS and post-hardcore act Thousand Below.
