Randy Blythe Tells Silent Musicians To ‘Grow A Spine’ In Political Debate

Share

There’s a point where staying quiet stops looking neutral and starts looking weak, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe has hit that point, and he’s not interested in pretending otherwise.

In a recent interview with Consequence, Blythe doubled down on his outspoken stance, calling out musicians who’ve chosen silence in today’s political climate and bluntly telling them to “grow a spine.”

No patience for silence

Blythe’s frustration isn’t subtle, coming from a band that’s spent decades dissecting power, war, and political decay, the idea of artists sitting this one out clearly doesn’t sit right.

Speaking on the current state of things, he said:

“I think people are just beaten down now, a lot of people feel as if their voice doesn’t matter, and their vote doesn’t matter, and they’re becoming ground down by the daily insanity that is life here now.”

For Blythe, that exhaustion isn’t an excuse, it’s exactly why people need to stay engaged.

“Tweeting, and having this online outrage and stuff is not enough. You have to become politically engaged. Sometimes you have to protest, sometimes you have to go to the ballot box.”

More than just noise

His comments go deeper than the usual surface level outrage, Blythe points directly at systemic issues, particularly the influence of money in politics and how it’s warped public trust.

“We need candidates who are not beholden to corporations and special interest groups. It’s time for people to start looking deeply at their local politicians, at their Congress people, to become engaged, to act like they give a fuck, rather than just sitting here and hand-wringing silently or in some weird social media echo chamber.”

It’s not exactly a new argument, but coming from someone embedded in heavy music’s DNA, it carries weight, Lamb of God never built their name on safe opinions.

Calling out the industry

Where Blythe really sharpens the knife is when he turns his attention to other artists.

“I’m not Taylor Swift… I’m not a mass entertainer. I don’t care about appeasing the algorithm, or streaming numbers, or any of that bullshit.”

And then the line that’s already doing laps online, “Get over it. Grow a spine.”

It’s a challenge, not just to musicians, but to anyone watching from the sidelines, Heavy music has always had politics baked into it, Blythe’s just reminding people of that, loudly.

Whether the industry listens is another story.
