It’s a rough day every time a new PlayStation title gets delayed, so it’s damn good news that we’ve received a firm release date for one of the platform’s flagship titles. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will arrive on June 11th, exclusive to Sony’s new PlayStation 5. For those who may not know, Ratchet & Clank follows the story of the titular characters, a mechanic and a robot, as they travel through the universe and defend it against evil.
The title was created by Insomniac Games, also known for Spyro the Dragon, Sunset Overdrive and the latest and greatest Spider-Man. They were acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment last year, which may explain the exclusivity of the title in addition to the longstanding history of the Sony/Insomniac relationship. Marcus Smith, Creative Director of Insomniac Games, commented: “If you’ve never played a Ratchet & Clank game before, this is an excellent one to start with as the adventure is a stand-alone storyline, but longtime fans of the series will find deeper layers of connection to previous games.”
The adventure this time around will follow the evil Dr. Nefarious using a device to access favourable dimensions, which ultimately separates our boys Ratchet and Clank. Follow them on their journey back to each other as they navigate through worlds, in a classic storyline that, of course, kicks off in Megalopolis. It promises to be a welcome introduction for newcomers while retaining sentimental ties to previous games to tickle the fancy of longtime fans (kind of like the new Crash Bandicoot, it appears).
Smith thoughtfully concluded his statement by thanking fans for their “support of Ratchet & Clank across the last 19 years and four generations of PlayStation consoles.” The next chapter of Ratchet & Clank is available for pre-order now.
