Resident Evil Requiem just debuted a new demo at Gamescom 2025, revealing one of its new villains, which the team have codenamed “Big Mama”.
Last week, Capcom showed off the new and scary Resident Evil Requiem demo at Gamescom. Fans got their chance to play through a limited area of the game and were introduced to its latest hero, Gracy Ashcroft.
They were also, of course, introduced to this area’s nightmare-inducing villain, who stalks you throughout the level.
In a new interview with IGN, Koshi Nakanishi, the director of the game, and Masato Kumazawa, its producer, shared some insights into the upcoming enemy.
Following in the footsteps of franchise staples like Mr. X, Nemesis, and, of course, Lady Dimitrescu, this new villain, currently nicknamed ‘Big Mama,’ is carrying a similar horrific aura. As shared in the interview, this new villain will haunt you throughout the game, hunting you down and keeping you on edge throughout your entire playthrough.
If you’re like me, the name and character design are giving off heavy Barbarian vibes. “The Mother” from said film would abduct and murder residents who entered her lair. Here’s hoping the villain in the game doesn’t take inspiration anywhere else, though.
According to the director, Nakanishi revealed that he wanted the character to appear large to stand out and overwhelm players. ““The character was originally smaller, but I figured let’s scale her up and I think that was the right answer because then her incredible size suddenly becomes overwhelming and she literally stands out from the pack of stalker enemies,” he shared. “The base concept was an enemy that you would know in an instant, and when you glance you know, like, ‘that’s not right, I don’t want any part of this, this is bad.’
To escape Big Mama, players will need to flee to a common source of safety in horror games: light. However, once Big Mama comes into contact with it, she flees by launching herself into the mansion’s roof. Throw in some faulty wiring in a run-down mansion, and you can probably predict a few jump scares on the horizon.
“I think with horror you need to establish the rules and then you need to break them to add even more fear and anxiety,” Nakanishi shared. “So you figure out how to stay safe, and then you realize that it’s not as safe as you thought. It is a way to just bring a next level of fear to the experience. You think you have it, and then we pull the rug from your feet. So that’s exactly my intention.”
Resident Evil Requiem releases on February 27, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S | X and PC.
