Rick and Morty are returning soon. Wubba lubba dub dub and so forth.
It seems like only yesterday I was writing about the imminent return of Rick And Morty in Season 8, but it turns out it was a year ago. Time’s funny that way. And space. Well, hopefully – this is a science fiction animated comedy, after all. So let’s take a look at the ninth season of what the experts* are calling “still pretty good as long as you set your expectations realistically”.

Rick And Morty Season 9 Trailer
What’s The Story?
As the official synopsis tells us:
Get ready to portal-jump back into the multiverse. The hit adult animated series returns with a season that’s bigger, bolder and more ambitious than ever. The galaxy’s favourite duo is back.
Rick and Morty Season 9 is all certified bangers. No AI slop! Just Grade A organic slop, made by real humans with real human traits like back hair and cysts. Please watch, or we’ll have neglected our families for nothing.
Other than that, you know the drill – high concepts and low humour, dimensional travel, catchphrases that are starting to wear a little thin, voices that sound exactly like Justin Roiland unless you’re really paying attention, etc etc.
Who’s in it?
- Ian Cardoni as Rick Sanchez, self loathing alcoholic and super genius.
- Harry Belden as Morty Smith, his put upon, nerve-wracked grandson.
- Chris Parnell as Jerry Smith, Morty’s no-hoper dad.
- Spencer Grammer as Summer Smith, Morty’s sister.
- Sarah Chalke as Beth Smith, Morty’s mother.
When’s it out?
Rick and Morty Season 9 debuts Monday, May 25 on HBO Max.
What’s the vibe?
Pretty subdued at this point. I mean, I’ll watch it, sure, and so will you, most likely, but the bloom is off the rose a bit vis-à-vis Rick And Morty. It’s still pretty good and pretty funny, but we’re a long way from the Szechuan sauce frenzy of season three. That was the absolute height of the series’ popularity, with an average 2.33 million viewers per episode. Season 7 clocked in with with about a fifth of that – roughly 420,000 per episode. So, you know, it’s not just me.
