Bean’s already been shot to death with arrows, but this deep into his career it must be hard to find new ways to die.
Your actual Robin Hood here, Jack Patten, is a newcomer, this being his first TV role. With that in mind, our first look at the upcoming medieval drama is pretty strongly focused on Sean Bean as the nominal villain of the piece, the Sheriff of Nottingham. Well, you would, wouldn’t you? Try and borrow some of those Game-Of-Thrones-back-when-it-was-good vibes.
Robin Hood Teaser
What’s the plot?
We’re all pretty familiar with the broad strokes of the Robin Hood story, but the official precis clues us in a bit vis a vis what kind of Robin Hood story we can expect, the merry man having proved to be a remarkably flexible symbol over the years:
A Saxon forester’s son, Rob, and the daughter of a Norman lord, Marian, work together to fight for justice and freedom following the Norman invasion of England in the Middle Ages. Rob becomes the leader of a band of rebel outlaws while Marian infiltrates the Norman courts, as they collaborate to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to England.
Interesting stuff. The Saxon/Norman clash comes up a bit in the Robin legendaria, but hasn’t gotten too much play in recent adaptations.
Who’s in it?
- Jack Patten as Robin “Rob” Hood.
- Lauren McQueen as Marian.
- Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham.
- Lydia Peckham as Priscilla of Nottingham.
- Steven Waddington as the Earl of Huntingdon.
- Marcus Fraser as Little John.
- Angus Castle-Doughty as Friar Tuck.
- Henry Rowley as Will.
- Connie Nielsen as Eleanor of Aquitaine.
When’s it out?
Robin Hood premieres on MGM+ on November 2, 2025. Expect a double episode premiere, and the remaining eight eps dropping weekly.
What’s the vibe?
It’s a little hard to say based on this brief look at the series. The presence of Jonathan English as co-creator and lead director is intriguing, though. English did the stupendously glory medieval war flick Ironclad, which climaxed with Brian Cox having has hands chopped off and getting flung into a castle wall with a catapult. This could be a much darker take on the material than we usually get.
