Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elijah Wood sign on for horror sequel Ready or Not: Here I Come

The Slayer and the Ringbearer join original Ready or Not star Samara Weaving for the upcoming film.

Production has started in Toronto on Ready or Not: Here I Come, the sequel to 2019’s class-conscious horror-comedy, Ready or Not.

Original star Samara Weaving is back as working class Grace, having survived the sacrificial intentions of her wealthy, Satan-worshipping in-laws last time out. This time she’s being joined by two genre legends in the form of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elijah Wood, who will be Buffy and Frodo til the day they die, no matter what they do.

In support of that, the Searchlight Pictures press release doesn’t even name their characters. It does, however, note that other OG Ready or Not veterans returning include directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence, and screenwriters Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.

On the cast list, fresh faces include Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies), Shawn Hatosy (The Pitt), Néstor Carbonell (The Dark Knight), Kevin Durand (Abigail), and, oh my gosh it’s Canadian body horror auteur David Cronenberg taking one of his occasional acting roles. Ready or Not: Here I Come just became a must see. Hopefully we’ll get word of a local release for Cronenberg’s latest, The Shrouds, soon.

There’s no plot info at the moment, but Radio Silence did offer a bit of “happy to be here” boilerplate: “We’re thrilled to be returning to the world of Ready or Not with Samara, Brett, Avery and Andrew, and so excited to work with this immensely talented cast and the incredible artists across every department joining the Ready or Not family.” It’s fun if you imagine them reciting it in unison.

But this news is a reason to be happy, on balance. Radio Silence recently gave us the fun vampire heist flick Abigail, and Samara Weaving’s a genuine scream queen now. Plus, Ready or Not was part of that mini-wave of class war horror movies, so if they’re still stocked up on that subtext, we’re here for it.

But here, let the trailer to the original Ready or Not remind you what a good time that one was:
