The remarkable life of Cypress Hill co founder Sen Dog is heading to the big screen, with a new documentary currently in production that promises to explore the rapper’s journey from a Cuban immigrant family to global hip-hop success.
Titled Mi Familia: Sen Dog and the American Dream, the film will shine a spotlight on Senen “Sen Dog” Reyes and the experiences that helped shape one of hip-hop’s most influential voices. The project has already attracted an impressive list of participants, with music heavyweights from across multiple genres contributing to the story.
Among those featured in the documentary are fellow Cypress Hill member B-Real, hip-hop pioneer DMC, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Guns N Roses guitarist Slash, Black Eyed Peas founder Will.i.am, funk icon George Clinton, music executive Emilio Estefan and global superstar Pitbull.
Rather than focusing solely on Cypress Hill’s success, the documentary aims to explore Reyes’ family history and the challenges they faced long before the group became one of the defining names of West Coast hip-hop (Per Variety).
What’s it about
According to the film’s synopsis, Mi Familia traces the family’s escape from Cuba following the Communist Revolution before documenting their struggles growing up in South Central Los Angeles during a period marked by gang violence and social unrest. The documentary will then follow the chain of events that eventually led to the formation of Cypress Hill and the group’s rise to international fame.
“Mi Familia is a truly unique experience that reconnects me with my Cuban roots and our family’s musical legacy, which stretches back many generations,” Reyes said.
“It also brings me closer to so many musical icons who have played a part in breaking barriers and blending genres and cultures, and I feel deeply honored to have them featured throughout my journey in this film.”
The documentary is being directed by Christian Jean, who also co-wrote and produced the project. Reyes shares writing duties and serves as a producer alongside Christina Banker through Freedom Village Films, while Sam Okun joins as executive producer.
Since emerging in 1991, Cypress Hill have become one of hip-hop’s most recognisable acts, blending hard-hitting beats, distinctive lyricism and cultural influence that continues to resonate more than three decades later. For Sen Dog, Mi Familia looks set to reveal the personal story behind the music for the first time.
