Simu Liu engaged in a bit of fancasting when he nominated his co-star in The Copenhagen Test to play DC’s premiere superheroine.
Out doing press for his sci-fi thriller The Copenhagen Test, which he stars in and produces, Simu Liu made an off-the-cuff pitch as to who should play Wonder Woman in James Gunn’s rapidly expanding DC Universe: his co-star, Melissa Barrera.
Liu took a stab at fan casting the Amazonian goddess while speaking to JoBlo.
“She really pushes herself,” the star of Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings said of his co-star. “I don’t know who might be listening to this interview, James Gunn or anybody else out there. But I think she really pushes herself. There were a couple of moments during stunt training where I was like, ‘That’s Wonder Woman-esque.’ I’m just throwing it out there.”
Wonder Woman, DC Comics’ premiere female super hero, was most recently portrayed on screen by Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who played the character in four movies in Zack Snyder‘s DC Extended Universe – five if you count Justice League twice, which you may as well. Barrera, on the other hand, was recently fired from her leading role in Scream 7 following statements she made in support of Palestine. Which may or may not have any influence on any hypothetical casting choices, but it sure is interesting to note.
While a Wonder Woman movie is currently in development, with screenwriter Ana Nogueira currently working on a script. Back in March, DC Studios head James Gunn posted on Threads that “We’re also not casting WW, nor even discussing it, until a script is finished.”
He went on to say that a Wonder Woman film is a priority for the studio but “…but I wouldn’t call that fast-tracked. Nothing is going to be shot unless we’re as sure as we can be that the script is good.”
