Skindred have released a new single, ‘Can I Get A’, offering another taste of their upcoming album ‘You Got This’, which arrives April 17th via Earache Records.
The Welsh ragga metal veterans are leaning fully into the genre blurring energy that has defined their career, delivering a track that jumps between electro, pop hooks and groove heavy metal with the kind of swagger only Skindred can pull off.
‘Can I Get A’ opens with a playful electro honky tonk intro before exploding into a singalong chorus packed with “woop-woops”, with flashes of ’80s pop influence, including a Phil Collins style drum break and gospel style backing vocals.
Benji Webbe Reflects On His Childhood
Underneath the upbeat sound sits a deeply personal story, frontman Benji Webbe uses the track to reflect on childhood poverty and the challenges he faced growing up (per press release):
“It’s me as a child seeing my friends with all these amazing things that people take for granted that I never had,” he explains. “I was eleven years old and was worried what my life would become. A lot of kids where I lived got into trouble and ended up in prison. I was just gonna grab that microphone and see where it would take me. I want to empower people to know that you can be what you want to be. Don’t spend your life worrying about what you haven’t got. Live your life because now is the time.”
The song also looks back on a tough period in Webbe’s life after he was orphaned as a child and raised by his older brother.
A tongue in cheek music video accompanies the single, featuring the band performing alongside dancers surrounded by swirling graphics:
