Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash has teased that the band is gearing up to record a new album on its way, but has yet to share a release date.
Guns N’ Roses fans, I hope you have your hopium ready.
Guitarist Slash has confirmed in a recent interview with Guitar World that the rock legends are gearing up to release a new album. In saying that, it’s looking like it might be some time before the album eventually makes its way into our ears.
“There’s so much material at this point – it’s a matter of having the discipline to sit down and fucking get into it,” admitted Slash. “But the thing with Guns is, in my experience, you can never plan ahead. You can never sit down and go, ‘We’re going to take this time, and we’re going to do this.’ Every time we’ve done that, it falls apart.”
Slash would admit part of the reason for this is due to the band’s creative process: “It just spontaneously happens through some sort of inspiration that triggers it. And the next thing you know, it’s off and running.”
“So it’s coming. I know it’s coming because everybody is thinking about it,” he added. “It’ll just happen when it happens.”
Bassist Duff McKagan also previously teased that new music was in the works all the way back in 2019. In an interview with Trunk Nation, McKagan confirmed the new album would feature entirely new compositions. “There’s new material. I don’t know how we’re gonna put it out. I think that’s a question too. Like, do you put out a record? Do you just keep putting out singles? I don’t know what the right answer is there in this day and age.”
In 2022, Guns N’ Roses would release the four-song EP Hard Skill. If you missed it, you’d be forgiven, as the release was exclusive to the official Guns N’ Roses store. The EP would contain two new songs, the title track and ‘Absurd’, which the band released in 2021, in addition to live versions of ‘Don’t Cry’ and ‘You’re Crazy’.
The last full-length album the band released was 2008’s Chinese Democracy, which, funnily enough, followed a similar 17-year gap between GNR albums (if you don’t count their covers album The Spaghetti Incident). However, Chinese Democracy was a fairly contentious release, given that only Axl Rose remained from the original lineup. So, if all goes according to plan, we’ll get to hear a proper reunion album from the group sooner rather than later.
