The Smashing Pumpkins Reunite With Butch Vig For First New Song In 32 Years

Share

The Smashing Pumpkins have officially reunited with legendary producer Butch Vig in the studio for the first time in more than three decades.

Frontman Billy Corgan confirmed the news online, revealing that he recently recorded a brand new single alongside bandmates James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlain with Vig behind the desk once again (per the PRP).

“Back in the studio with Butch Vig for the first time in 32 years!” Corgan wrote.

“James, Jimmy, and I had an awesome time recording this new single.”

The reunion marks the first time Vig has worked directly with the band since helping shape two of the most influential alternative rock albums of the ‘90s — 1991’s Gish and the iconic Siamese Dream in 1993, those records didn’t just define early Smashing Pumpkins, they helped define an entire era of alternative music.

One of the most important producers in Rock history

Vig himself, of course, remains one of the most important producers in rock history, having also worked on landmark releases from Nirvana, Helmet and countless others before later forming Garbage.

According to Corgan, the new track is already “98% done” and is expected to arrive sometime later this year, although he’s still keeping details surrounding the song’s exact purpose under wraps for now.

Naturally, fans are already spiralling at the idea of the classic Pumpkins lineup reconnecting with the producer responsible for some of their most beloved material, the timing also lines up with another major milestone looming for the band, with plans for a 30th anniversary celebration around Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness already beginning to emerge.

Whether this turns into a standalone release or something bigger remains unclear, but for longtime Smashing Pumpkins fans, seeing Corgan, Iha, Chamberlain and Vig back in the same room again is already enough to get excited about.
