Snoop Dogg’s life is officially heading to the big screen, with Universal Pictures confirming the release date for the long awaited biopic, Snoop, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on August 6th, 2027.
The Snoop Dogg film will star Outer Banks actor Jonathan Daviss as the legendary rapper, while Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer has been tapped to bring the story of the Death Row Records icon to life.
Universal has described the project as the “definitive biopic” of Snoop Dogg, although details surrounding the film’s storyline remain under wraps (per Billboard).
It’s still unknown whether Snoop will focus on a particular chapter of Calvin Broadus Jr.’s career or tell the full story of his rise from Long Beach to becoming one of hip hop’s most recognisable figures. Universal, however, has a proven track record in the genre, having previously released acclaimed music films including Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile.
Snoop’s turn
Snoop first confirmed the project during CinemaCon earlier this year, where he reflected on finally getting the opportunity to tell his own story:
“After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn,” the rapper said. “My director, Craig Brewer, he just showed us how hard it is out here for a pimp from Hustle & Flow. And then last year, he got us all singing ‘Sweet Caroline.'”
Alongside his expanding business ventures, Snoop recently reunited with fellow West Coast artists Kurupt and DJ Battlecat for the new single ‘Me N the Boyz’ (below), continuing a career that has remained remarkably active for more than three decades.
Since breaking through in the early 1990s alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg has become one of rap’s defining voices, earning dozens of Billboard Hot 100 entries, multiple chart-topping singles and widespread recognition across music, television, film and sport.
With filming expected to begin this year, anticipation is already building around Snoop. The combination of Brewer behind the camera and Daviss stepping into one of hip hop’s most recognisable roles sets the stage for one of the most anticipated music biopics currently in development.
