Cinema has well and truly peaked with this recon vs raptors actioner.
You should probably be wary of dizzyingly high concepts – remember how Snakes On A Plane turned out? When’s the last time you rewatched that one? Exactly. Having said that “grunts fight dinosaurs in the Vietnam War” is a hell of a high concept.
Primitive War Trailer
What’s the plot?
It’s pretty straight forward.
At the height of the Vietnam War, Ryan Kwanten leads his team of soldiers into the jungle on a rescue mission, trying to track down a missing Special Forces unit. Do they find them? Hard to say. But you know what they do find? Dinosaurs! It’s Full Metal Jurassic Park, and I’m willing to swallow any narrative reason it takes to get a soldiers vs dinosaurs fight.
Directed and co-written by Australian sci-fi and horror maven Luke Sparke, Primitive War is adapted from the novel of the same name by Ethan Pettus.
Who’s in it?
- Ryan Kwanten as Sergeant First Class Ryan Baker

When’s it out?
Primitive War is in cinemas now.
What’s the vibe?
Remember 65? The sci-fi dinosaur flick with Adam Driver? Remember how it took itself way too seriously? I don’t think the same mistake is being made here, somehow. This is more like The Valley of Gwangi. Or Kong: Skull Island, if you want a more recent point of comparison. But my point is: soldiers vs dinosaurs – how could you not?
