Soundgarden’s Final Album With Chris Cornell Is Now Being Mixed As Matt Cameron Confirms Eight Completed Songs

After years of uncertainty, Soundgarden’s long awaited final album featuring the late Chris Cornell has reached a major milestone.

Drummer Matt Cameron has revealed the surviving members of legendary Seattle band Soundgarden are now mixing the record, confirming it will feature eight songs built from recordings made with Cornell before his passing in 2017 (per Blabbermouth).

Working alongside guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd, producer Terry Date and acclaimed mixer Joe Barresi, the band has spent years carefully assembling what will become Soundgarden’s final studio release with Cornell’s vocals.

Speaking on the Let There Be Talk podcast, Cameron explained the material dates back more than a decade:

“Yeah. We’d been sending demos back and forth since, like, 2013, ’14, something like that. I would send Chris some stuff. He would rearrange it, make a song out of it… I sent him three tracks, and then he would sing on top of the instrumentals that I’d written and rearrange them and everything.”

Rather than relying solely on unfinished demos, the band has combined rehearsal recordings, guitar parts played by Cornell and vocal demos to complete the songs as faithfully as possible.

New material is almost complete

When asked how much material exists, Cameron confirmed the project is nearing completion:

“Eight songs. I think that that’s pretty much all there is with vocals. We had some instrumentals left over that Kim wants work on. So maybe we’ll do some new stuff together, which would be fine by me.”

While there’s still no release date, Cameron said the immediate focus is simply getting the album finished:

“Well, we don’t really have a [release] date yet. We’re just gonna try to get this thing mixed, get it over the finish line, and then hopefully we’ll have a better idea what’s gonna come next. We’re just taking it one step at a time ’cause it’s been kind of a long process just to get to here.”

The emotional weight of revisiting Cornell’s final recordings hasn’t been lost on the band either:

“I always thought there’s three or four really, really strong songs. So, I’m really looking forward to getting it done and putting it out there… And it sounds like SOUNDGARDEN. It’s just like we’re working on a SOUNDGARDEN album. We are.”

Cameron also revealed that completing the record was one of the major reasons behind his decision to step away from Pearl Jam in 2025 after nearly three decades with the band.

“I pretty much quit. There was no animosity at all… I wanted to finish up this SOUNDGARDEN project and kind of just put all my attention into that with no sort of tour commitments and things like that.”

The album has been years in the making, with Cornell credited as a songwriter on all eight tracks. It will also become the first Soundgarden release since King Animal in 2012 and the band’s final chapter with one of rock’s most celebrated voices.

The wait isn’t over just yet, but for the first time in years, the finish line is finally in sight.
