We’re finally getting a busted-ass street level Spidey.
I really dig Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man, even though I thought No Way Home was an absolute mess on second viewing. But one bad movie doesn’t ruin a character, and all else aside, No Way Home left us in an interesting position, narratively speaking. Not only was Holland’s Peter Parker no longer Tony Stark’s heir apparent, but thanks to some mystical machinations the entire world has forgotten that Spider-Man exists, setting us up for the one thing fans have been clamouring for: a busted-ass Peter Parker who can barely pay the rent, but still tries to do the right thing.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer
What’s the plot?
As the official synopsis tells us:
After the record-breaking global success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks an entirely new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.
I, too, am annoyed that plot synopses now routinely tout box office and/or ratings success, but that’s not a bad one all up. It’s worth noting that Destin Daniel Cretton is on directing duties here. Marvel Zombies will know he directed Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, but his 2013 film Short Term 12 is a near masterpiece, for what it’s worth.
Who’s in it?
- Tom Holland as Peter Parker, your friendly neighourhood Spider-Man.
- Zendaya as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson, the love of his life, who now no longer remembers him.
- Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds: Parker’s former best friend.
- Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, the Punisher – and praise God for that.
- Tramell Tillman as Bill.
- Michael Mando as Mac Gargan, the Scorpion.
- Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, the rampaging Hulk.
- Marvin Jones III portrays Lonnie Lincoln, AKA Tombstone, a crime boss with albinism, near-indestructible skin, and superhuman strength.
In addition, Eman Esfandi appears as MJ’s new piece, Zabryna Guevara is back as Sheila Rivera Daredevil: Born Again, and Liza Colón-Zayas and Keith David have been cast in an undisclosed roles. Charlie Cox is expected to show up as Daredevil, too.
When’s it out?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is screening exclusively in cinemas from July 30.
What’s the vibe?
I’m in the bag for this, no fear. My only worry is that they’ll solve Pete’s new status quo in one movie, which would be a hell of a waste of potential.
