The fan fave character from Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is getting his own movie.
Here’s some good news to buoy your spirits during the midweek doldrums. Daniel Kaluuya is working on an animated feature film starring Spider-Punk, the alternate universe Spider-Man variant he voiced in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.
Note, we said, “working on” – the Nope and Widows star is co-writing the script with Ajon Singh (Primetime). Deadline has the full story.
Created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel, and debuting in 2015’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10, Spider-Punk is Hobie Brown, a mohawked, guitar-wielding Black British version of the ol’ web-head. He brings a somewhat more ACAB attitude to the whole business of wall-crawling, which sets him apart from your more wholesome takes on the character. While I might hesitate to call him the MVP of Across The Spider-Verse – there’s so much good stuff in that flick – he was certainly the break out character, bringing some much-needed edge to the whole affair.
Amy Pascal, along with Spider-Verse directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, is producing for Sony Pictures Animation.
Other than that, there’s not much to say at this stage, but it’s been a big week for Spider-Man news, with Tom Holland revealing his costume for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Oh, hey, blue and red. Nice.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings), Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits cinemas on 31 July 2026. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is due on 25 June 2027. And at some point we’re getting a live action Spider-Verse side project in the form of Spider-Noir, with Nicolas Cage once again playing the moody, monochrome web-slinger he voiced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. That’s a hell of a lot of Spider-Man. Spider-Men? Spider-Mans? Whatever.
