Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Cancelled at Paramount+

The newest Star Trek series will end after its second season, which has already been filmed.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been given the axe. Or possibly the bat’leth. Deadline has reported that the upcoming second season, which has already been filmed, will be its last. A release date has yet to be confirmed.

Set in the 32nd Century era first explored in Star Trek: Discovery, Starfleet Academy was exactly what it says on the tin: a drama about the students and staff of the titular school, the first Starfleet cadets in over a century (it’s a whole thing). Starring Holly Hunter as Chancellor Nahla Ake, with Star Trek veteran Robert Picardo in support and a host of fresh faces front and centre as the students, it was a decent show that found its feet quickly in its first 10 episode season, for all that it did at times come across as a CW teen drama in space.

But with strong professional reviews on one side of the ledger and some very review-bomby audience ratings on the other, was destined to be mired in lame culture war controversy, with no lesser a leech than official White House vampire Stephen Miller chiming in for some goddamn reason. But all that aside, the first season struggled to attract a viewership, so maybe in this case it all balances out.

In joint statement, CBS Studios and Paramount+ said, “We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to life. The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”
