Steven Tyler Unlikely to Return to Touring Says Joe Perry

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has indicated that a full-scale tour is unlikely for the band, citing frontman Steven Tyler’s reluctance and inability to commit to the demands of life on the road.

The band announced their retirement from touring in August 2024 after Tyler suffered a severe vocal cord injury. Their ‘Peace Out’ farewell run, which began in 2023, was cut short after just three shows. While Tyler has since made a handful of live appearances, including charity performances and guest spots at high-profile events, however Perry made it clear that the prospect of another extensive tour is slim.

Speaking to WBUR, Perry said that while one-off shows remain a possibility, the rigours of a long tour are no longer feasible. “I would bet that there’s an Aerosmith show left,” he said, noting the potential for the band to perform as part of a documentary project. “I’ve been spending a lot of time with Steven and he just doesn’t want to tour, and he can’t tour.” Perry also admitted that he is not sure he himself would want to commit to another 40-date run, acknowledging the toll it takes on the band.

In recent months, Tyler has performed at the Black Sabbath farewell event in Birmingham, joining a line-up of notable musicians for collaborative sets. These appearances, however, have been infrequent and without any suggestion of a return to regular touring.

Perry’s comments follow earlier hints at the possibility of more shows, though he has since tempered expectations. Meanwhile, other members of Aerosmith have pursued separate projects: Perry has revived The Joe Perry Project for a North American tour, and bassist Tom Hamilton has formed a new group, Close Enemies, alongside musicians with long-standing ties to Aerosmith and other major acts.

Hamilton has also stated that he remains uncertain about the future of the band, with Tyler’s vocal injury continuing to be a determining factor. While Aerosmith’s legacy as one of rock’s most enduring live acts remains intact, the latest remarks from Perry suggest that any further performances will be special occasions rather than the start of another global tour.
