Bad news for Sum 41 fans in Brisbane—tonight’s planned sideshow at the Fortitude Music Hall has been cancelled after frontman Deryck Whibley was diagnosed with pneumonia.
With Good Things Festival kicking off this Friday in Melbourne, it’s looking increasingly uncertain whether Whibley will recover in time to hit the stage.
The band issued a statement earlier today addressing the cancellation:
“Unfortunately, we have to make the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s show in Brisbane due to Deryck being diagnosed with pneumonia. He is receiving the best possible local care and we are working with the promoter to make sure all ticket buyers for tonight’s show are refunded and will let you know more soon. – Sum 41”
For ticketholders, refunds will be processed automatically by Ticketmaster within 14-21 days, with purchasers being notified via email.
The cancellation casts a shadow over Sum 41’s scheduled headline performances at Good Things Festival 2024, which begins in Melbourne on Friday, December 6th, before moving to Sydney on Saturday, December 7th, and Brisbane on Sunday, December 8th. While there’s no official word yet on whether they’ll bow out of the festival, Whibley’s condition raises serious concerns about the band’s availability.
This year’s Good Things Festival lineup is packed with heavy hitters, including Korn, Violent Femmes, and Billy Corgan, alongside icons like Mastodon and Northlane. Sum 41’s participation is a key draw for many attendees, and fans will be anxiously awaiting updates on their status.
For now, all eyes are on Melbourne as the festival prepares to open its gates. Whether Sum 41 will make it to the stage remains to be seen, but with Good Things shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest rock and metal events, the show will undoubtedly go on.
Blunt Magazine will continue to follow this story, so stay tuned for updates on Sum 41 and all the action from Good Things Festival 2024.
