Sunk Loto are back in full force, and the Gold Coast heavyweights sound nowhere near ready to slow down after nearly three decades of riffs and reinvention.
The Australian metal pioneers have unveiled their new single ‘Dead Shadows’, alongside the band’s first official music video featuring members of the group since 2003, this follows 2024’s ‘God Complex’. The new track feels less like a nostalgia grab and more like a band ripping open the next chapter, it’s produced alongside revered heavy music architect Forrester Savell, ‘Dead Shadows’ leans into the thick, humid groove that made Sunk Loto one of Australia’s defining alternative metal acts, while still pushing their sound into rougher and more atmospheric territory.
Sunk Loto ‘Dead Shadows’ video
Following the Between Birth and Death 20 year anniversary tour in late 2023, we got back together early in 2024 with a handful of ideas that quickly turned into four new tracks, including Dead Shadows,’ the band shared.
‘We headed into the studio with Forrester Savell to bring them to life soon after.’
The band added: ‘Dead Shadows felt like the right first single after a few years away, it sits right in that space between where we’ve come from and where we’re heading, and it really lets Jas’ vocals shine.’
That balance is probably what makes the track hit hardest, it still carries the bruised swagger and downtuned stomp longtime fans expect, but there’s also a sharper sense of control running beneath it, Jason Brown’s vocals cut through with more weight than ever.
For older Australian heavy music fans, Sunk Loto’s legacy hardly needs rehashing, from signing with Sony as teenagers to sharing stages with global heavyweights during the late ’90s and early 2000s boom, the band helped define an era where Australian alternative metal briefly felt unstoppable.
Now, after reuniting in 2022 and rebuilding momentum through sold out tours and new material, Sunk Loto seem determined to prove this revival isn’t temporary.
The band will return to the stage this August for three already sold out east coast shows in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.
