We are deeply curious about how Denis Villeneuve handles Dune Messiah
Principal photography has wrapped on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Chapter 3, his third at-bat adapting Frank Herbert’s epochal sci-fi epic following 2021’s Dune and 2023’s Dune: Part 2. And as if to restore balance to the universe, production has commenced on the second season of Dune: Prophecy, HBO’s prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of the films. Truly, the spice must flow.
Picking up a decade or so after the end of Dune: Part 2, Dune: Part 3 adapts Dune Messiah, the second novel in Herbert’s Dune sequence (you can stop after the third one, mark my words). That’s going to be an interesting needle to thread, given the events of the book, but Villeneuve’s done a spectacular job of adapting the material so far, so we’re in safe hands.
Returning to the cast are Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Anya Taylor-Joy, and if you’re wondering how Momoa’s returning given his character was chopped into sashimi in Dune, we’ll just direct you to the Wikipedia link above, or your local library. New to the Dune saloon is the ubiquitous Robert Pattinson, rumoured to playing the villainous Scytale.
Meanwhile in TV land, filming for Dune: Prophecy season 2 is now taking place in Hungary, Jordan, and Spain.
Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Australian Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, Australian Yerin Ha, Barbara Marten, and Tessa Bonham Jones are all returning for the second series, with the ensemble expanding to include newcomers Indira Varma (The Night Manager, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Ashley Walters (Top Boy, Adolescence) and Tom Hollander (The White Lotus, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans).
No word of a release date as yet, but HBO did release a fun behind the scenes sneak peak on Instagram.
