Time Travel Adventure The End Of Oak Street Gets A Very Spielbergian Trailer

Share

Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor battle dinosaurs in the latest from the director of It Follows.

There’s more than a whiff of early career Steven Spielberg to the first trailer for The End Of Oak Street, the new sci-fi adventure from It Follows and Under The Silver Lake director David Robert Mitchell. We can probably chalk that up to the influence of producer JJ Abrams, who absolutely loooooves him some Spielberg. Not only was his 2011 film Super 8 a riff on E.T., The ‘Berg once hired him and future The Batman director Matt Reeves to fix up some old 8mm reels he had laying around when Abrams was a teenager.

What’s the plot?

As the official synopsis tells us:

After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, a family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.

Well, the “mysterious cosmic event” could be damn near anything, but the “someplace unknown” certainly appears to be Earth of the distant past, say 65 million years or so, which means our time-tossed suburbanites have to deal with dinosaurs. That should be fun.

Who’s in it?

  • Anne Hathaway as Denise.
  • Ewan McGregor as Greg.
  • Maisy Stella as Audrey.
  • Christian Convery as Brian.
  • Jordan Alexa Davis.
  • P. J. Byrne.
  • Chris Coy.

When’s it out?

The End Of Oak Street hits Australian cinemas on August 13.

What’s the vibe?

While I kinda side-eye the fact that the film seems to start off in the late 70s or early 80s – it means we’re sort of going from a period piece to another period piece, if you follow me – but that’s a quibble. My bar for enjoyment of dinosaur movies is incredibly low, so as long as get some rampaging fossils and people getting et by said fossils, it’s a gentleman’s three stars from me.
