Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope) is producing, with Justin Tipping directing this slice of phys ed frights.
We could make a few jokes about high school sports already being frightening enough, but it’s a bit obvious and speaks to our chosen vocation a bit too sharply. Instead, we’ll note that Him seems more like a sports-themed riff on Whiplash than anything else. Possibly with some supernatural shenanigans sprinkled in for extra flavour.
Produced under Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions shingle, Him sees Tyriq Withers as Cameron Cade, a promising young footballer who gets the chance of a lifetime when he’s invited by ageing legendary quarterback Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans) to train at his remote compound. But it turns out being the best requires sacrifice, and possibly in the ritual sense if the trailer’s Balenciaga-satanic imagery is anything to go by.
Co-starring Julia Fox as Elsie White, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, Akeem Hayes, and Tierra Whack, Him has some heat on it. Originally titled GOAT, the spec script by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie made the Black List of best unproduced screenplays in 2022 before finding its way to Tipping and Monkeypaw. A bit of development, a co-writing credit for Tipping, and the rest is history.
Him is in Australian cinemas from September 25, via Universal.
