Australian heavy rock veterans The Mark Of Cain are heading back to the stage this spring, announcing the ‘Front Towards Audience’ Tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their acclaimed album This Is This.
The run follows The Mark of Cain‘s celebrated 2023–24 performances of Ill At Ease in full and will coincide with appearances at Brisbane’s Zed 51 before a series of headline dates across Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.
The tour’s name is a nod to the military warning stamped onto the M18A1 Claymore mine, with guitarist and vocalist Josie Scott explaining its connection to the band’s famously uncompromising live shows:
“‘Front Towards Enemy’ was the instruction placed on the M18A1 Claymore bomb. A lethal anti-personnel device capable of spraying steel balls to a distance of about 90 meters in a 60-degree arc causing untold damage. Much the same as TMOC really; Front Towards Audience (our friends though, not our enemy), pummelling them for about 90 mins via Kim’s bass… sorry I meant that collectively it’s TMOC doing that. And Kim’s loud bass…”

25 years of ‘This Is This’
Released in 2001, This Is This remains one of the defining records in The Mark Of Cain’s catalogue. Reflecting on the album’s creation, Scott revealed the songs took shape during rehearsals with drummer John Stanier before being completed in the United Kingdom with producer Andy Gill of Gang of Four.
“‘This is This’ was an oft used quote we used from Michael Cimino’s film The Deer Hunter to describe a situation which just ‘was’. Often used jokingly by us, it also underscored the idea of having your shit together…”
Alongside material from This Is This and fan favourites spanning the band’s career, The Mark Of Cain will also debut new songs ahead of recording their long awaited sixth studio album early next year. The forthcoming release will be their first full length record since Songs of the 3rd and 5th, which arrived in 2012.
With a reputation built on thunderous live performances and uncompromising songwriting, the upcoming run offers fans the chance to celebrate one of Australian heavy music’s most influential bands while also getting an early taste of what’s still to come.
