The Mummy 4 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are just gonna pretend the third film didn’t happen.
The Mummy is returning! That’s good news; original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reuniting for the fourth film in the series under directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence. It’ll be hitting our screens in May, 2028, so we’ve got a bit of time to kill, but fans are keen to get their hands on any details about the hotly anticipated sequel.
To that end, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet have carefully fielded a few questions on the subject while out stumping for their latest film, Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, the pair made one thing clear: that little-loved third film, The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (2008)? Yeah, don’t worry about that one.
Now, I know that I’ve seen Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor at least a couple times, but I couldn’t tell you 10 things about it with a gun to my head. While Brendan Fraser returned as adventurer Rick O’Connell for the third film, Rachel Weisz had better things to do with her time, so Maria Bello took over the role of plucky librarian Evelyn Carnahan-O’Connell. Another addition was Australian actor Luke Ford as their kid, Alex O’Connell, and if you ever bump into him, get him to tell you about the casting process – you’ll laugh your ass off. Also, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh turn up, plus a passel of abominable snowmen. You know, on paper, it looks pretty good.
But not to the Radio Silence lads. Asked whether the events of Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor will factor into their take, Bettinelli-Olpin answered, “Well, Rachel is in this one.”
“That should answer the question for you,” Gillett added, pretty much closing the door on the second sequel.
So, no Dragon Emperor nonsense in The Mummy 4. Now, will the Scorpion King show up in this one? That’s the real question. But so far, there’s been radio silence on the subject.
