The latest super-promo reminds us that this is about truth, justice, and a really strong guy.
It kinda makes sense that they’d wait for the trailer about the biggest popular film format to showcase some of the (presumably) biggest moments from James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman. So far, the publicity material has focused on the emotion of the character, leaning into all the hope and goodness invested in that big red S. But this time, they want to remind us that a) this thing is definitely gonna be worth an IMAX ticket, and b) this guy punches giant monsters and lifts buildings when he’s not playing with his dog or railing his co-worker (I’m just saying I’d like to know The Daily Planet‘s policy on staff relationships).
Superman Trailer
What’s the plot?
I mean, come on – it’s Superman. You know the general gist.
Who’s in it?
A lot of folks, as this thing has to act as the linchpin of the whole DCU. We’ve got:
- David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman
- Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and really, no one else would do.
- Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
- Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific
- Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho
- Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, a note-perfect piece of casting.
- Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl
- Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Jonathan and Martha Kent, Clark’s adoptive human parents.
- Wendell Pierce as Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet.
- Skyler Gisondo as Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, adventurous photographer and good egg.
- Beck Bennett as reporter Steve Lombard
- Mikaela Hoover as columnist Cat Grant
- Christopher McDonald as reporter Ron Troupe
- And on the villainous side, Sara Sampaio is Eve Teschmacher, Lex’s squeeze, while Terence Rosemore is Luthor’s hapless henchman, Otis.
Plus, we’ve got Frank Grillo as A.R.G.U.S. director Rick Flag Sr., a character he voiced in the animated DCU series Creature Commandos; María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica aka The Engineer, a kind of nanotech cyborg whose comic book history is honestly too convoluted to go into here; Milly Alcock debuting as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El ahead of the upcoming Supergirl; and Sean “all in the family” Gunn as tech billionaire businessman Maxwell Lord, who we last saw being played by Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984, but that can be safely ignored.
When’s it out?
Superman is in Australian cinemas – including IMAX – on July 10, 2025.
What’s the vibe?
Incredibly positive. Nicholas Hoult seems to be having a blast delivering Luthor’s villainous monologues, don’t you think? There’s definitely a touch of Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Mission: Impossible III in the threaten-the-family bit in the new trailer. It’s funny – we don’t really have a definitive on-screen Lex Luthor. Sure, your heart might say Gene Hackman, but he never came across as a credible threat. Maybe Hoult’s the man for the moment? We shall see.
