Peter Dinklage is the man with the mop in the long-delayed remake of Troma’s trash classic.
We’ve been waiting a long time for writer and director Macon Blair’s remake of the old Troma workhorse, The Toxic Avenger. It was the opening night film of Fantastic Fest back in September, 2021, but since then? Crickets, tumbleweeds, and the odd hopeful rumbling. But now here’s our first decent look at Peter Dinklage as everyone’s favourite mop-wielding weirdo.
The Toxic Avenger Trailer
What’s the plot?
Based on the 1984 schlock masterpiece by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman, The Toxic Avenger sees our man Dinklage as put-upon single dad Winston Ooze, who’s struggling to maintain a connection with his son, Wade. However, as the official synopsis tells us, “…exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he’s transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger. Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant… justice is best served radioactive.”
Of course, if you’re familiar with the Troma brand, you know that all comes with a hefty serving of ultra-violence, nudity, gross-out humour, and charmingly cheap special effects. It’s what they do.
Who’s in it?
- Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, aka The Toxic Avenger, with Luisa Guerreiro in the Toxie suit.
- Jacob Tremblay as Wade Gooze, Winston’s kid.
- Taylour Paige as J.J. Doherty
- Kevin Bacon as Bob Garbinger, obviously a villain.
- Elijah Wood as Fritz Garbinger, and likewise.
- Sarah Niles as Mayor Togar
- Julia Davis as Kissy Sturnevan
- Julian Kostov as Budd Berserk
- David Yow as Guthrie Stockins
- Macon Blair as Dennis
- Rebecca O’Mara as Shelly Gooze
- Jonny Coyne as Thad Barkabus
- Jane Levy as Cheerful Insurance Rep
When’s it out?
Excellent question! In the US it’s getting a theatrical release on August 29, 2025, and they’re putting it out unrated, which is a bold move. Locally, Umbrella have the rights, so keep an eye on them for release deets.
What’s the vibe?
Personally, after almost two years of waiting, I’m just keen to see the bloody thing. But it certainly has the right lowbrow je ne sais quoi, don’t you think?
