The X-Files will return soonish, and a pretty killer roster of guest stars is coming with it.
I’m excited as hell for Ryan Coogler‘s upcoming reboot of 90s banger The X-Files. How could I not be? I was 17 when the original series dropped in 1993, a dyed-in-the-wool nerd, so I was right in the crosshairs for what was ostensibly a cult show of limited appeal to normies. Of course, hindsight being 20/20, we know that The X-Files was bona fide cultural phenomenon, living well beyond a widely predicted single season, spinning off two feature films, two related series in Millennium and The Lone Gunmen, a rather coolly received two season revival series a few years back, plus comics, tie-in novels, action figures, video games, and all the usual merch and ephemera.
So, the news that Coogler, one of the most exciting filmmakers operating at the moment, was taking the reins for yet another X-Files reboot, certainly got my attention, as I’ve written about before. Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler are our paranormal investigators this time out, which made me happy – Deadwyler is killin’ it HBO‘s Rooster at the minute – and angered the usual rabble of racist grotesqueries.
But perhaps the guest cast that the good folks over at Deadline have announced will allay that anger? Probably not, but stranger things have happened – like the Tunguska blast of 1908. At any rate, Deadwyler and Patel will be joined by Amy Madigan, fresh off her Oscar win for Weapons, plus the always welcome Steve Buscemi, the reliably creepy Ben Foster, Reservation Dogs star Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton.
Given several of the announced cast are First Nations actors, I’d guess – and I could be wrong – that we’re getting a First Nations-themed pilot, an area that the original series explored from time to time. So expect more reactionary yodeling for the usual quarters, while the rest of us enjoy what’s shaping up to be a banger of a show.
