Tom Morello Fires Back At Claims Musicians Should Stay Out Of Politics

Share

Tom Morello has never exactly been known for keeping his opinions to himself, and he’s not about to start now.

The guitarist, whose career has long intersected with activism and political commentary, has pushed back on the idea that artists should avoid speaking publicly about political issues, calling the criticism selective and inconsistent (per Loudwire).

Speaking during a recent interview with Metal Hammer Greece, Morello argued that objections to politically outspoken musicians often depend more on disagreement than principle:

“When people say that musicians should not be involved in politics, it means they are people that disagree with your politics. The second that you write a song that agrees with their politics, all of a sudden they’re all for it. So one, it’s very hypocritical, but two, I also think that, why should you give away your free speech rights in the job that you do? Because it offends someone?”

Beyond the music

For Morello, the issue goes beyond music and speaks to a broader expectation placed on public figures to stay neutral in order to remain commercially safe. He questioned why someone’s profession should determine whether they’re allowed to express personal beliefs, suggesting artists shouldn’t be expected to leave their values at the studio door.

Morello also warned against staying silent during moments that matter:

“There’s an extra hot layer of Hell for people in times of great injustice who censor themselves and remain quiet when they should have spoken out because they’re afraid of some Internet troll,” he said.

The conversation also touched on the music that shaped his own worldview, Morello pointed to both Public Enemy and The Clash as artists that influenced him deeply despite coming from different backgrounds.

What connected them, he explained, was their willingness to challenge power structures and speak directly to listeners who felt unheard, that experience helped shape his belief that music can still carry meaning beyond entertainment.

As Morello sees it, every song has the potential to reach someone who needs to hear it.
