Tom Morello’s recent run of shows in India turned into something far more personal than a standard solo outing, with the legendary guitarist sharing the stage with his son Roman Morello for a multi generational guitar showcase that leaned heavily on legacy, politics, and pure shred.
Morello wrapped up a trio of Indian dates on December 21st, closing out the run at Phoenix Marketcity in Bangalore, the set pulled from across his career, touching on Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, and his solo material, but the night’s defining moments came when Roman joined him onstage.
The 14 year old guitarist played alongside his Dad on their 2024 collaborative single ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love’ (below), before returning for a series of covers that underlined just how deep his chops already run.
Roman featured on Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Mr. Crowley’, Steve Vai’s ‘For The Love Of God’, and again during the show’s closing stretch, which included ‘Killing In The Name’, John Lennon’s ‘Power To The People’, and KISS’ ‘Rock And Roll All Nite’.
The father/son collaboration isn’t a novelty add on either, speaking last year about writing ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love’, Morello said:
“It’s a collaboration with my 13-year-old son, Roman. During the pandemic, while the rest of us were baking bread and trying to learn a language, he was practising guitar for eight hours a day. I’ve been relegated to being the rhythm guitar player in my family as I have a shredding prodigy now who’s really giving me a run for my money.”
He continued:
“One day I was walking by his room and these huge drop-D riffs were coming out of there and I said ‘What’s that’ and he said ‘Oh, I’ve just been working on some riffs, do you think these go well together?’. I was like ‘Son. Those go very well together and we’re about to write our first song together.’”
“So ‘Soldier In The Army Of Love’ is about the redemptive power of rock and roll. It’s got huge Morello riffs from multi-generations and a shredding guitar solo where you have to guess which one of us played.”
