Tom Waits And Kathleen Brennan Have Announced A Career-Spanning Covers Album

Share

The Ramones, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and more feature on Where The Willow And The Dogwood Grow.

Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan first met on the set of Sylvester Stalllone’s 1978 drama Paradise Alley, where Waits was making his acting debut while Brennan was employed as a scriptwriter. But they didn’t start officially writing music together until the 1985 album Rain Dogs (you can argue about Swordfishtrombones all you like, I used “officially” for a reason). Still, they’ve been partners in both life and art for over four decades now, and their works have been covered countless times, which means the upcoming covers album Where The Willow And The Dogwood Grow has plenty of material to winnow down to produce what looks like a roster of absolute bangers.

Where The Willow And The Dogwood Grow

Words and Music: Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan

IMAGE: Ace Records

Out on May 29 through Ace Records, Where The Willow And The Dogwood Grow collates 19 covers of songs written by Waits and Brennan, arranged chronologically, with extensive liner notes and a a track-by-track commentary from the songwriters. Well, 18, really; the first track, a stunning rendition of “Jersey Girl” by Bruce Springsteen,, was written about Brennan, not by her. But the rest are all Waits and Brennan gold.
